The Assessment Process
The journey to fostering is different for everyone. It normally takes around 6 months to go through the assessment process, although this largely depends on your personal circumstances.More info
Fostering allowances for all foster carers are set by the Minister for Children. They represent the maximum that can be paid by us or other independent fostering agencies.
The basic fostering allowance for children placed with FFI is currently €352 per week, per child. Some children have more challenging needs and requirements than others, so enhanced payments can be requested from Tusla for certain types of placements.
The fostering allowance takes into account the costs of living with a foster child. This includes:
The foster care allowance is in respect of, and for the benefit of the foster child and therefore must be used to meet the day to day costs associated with looking after a foster child. It is not a payment or salary to foster carers. Fostering involves caring for very vulnerable children and it is important that these children would experience equality of care and opportunity within a foster family.
The allowance you receive when fostering with us is exempt from taxation under the Finance Bill 2005. This also means that the money you receive is not usually classed as income when applying for certain benefits. However, we recommend that you consult with the Department of Social Protection for confirmation on this.
